Shumaker Consulting Engineering & Land Surveying, D.P.C. (SCE) is proud to announce they were recipients of an 2015 Diamond Award for Transportation. The award winning project was headed by Creighton Manning with SCE as a team member.  The award was granted for the Fuller Road/Washington Avenue design located in Albany, NY.

The 2015 Diamond Award Gala was recently held by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), of New York. The award ceremony has been compared to the “Academy Awards” of the consulting engineering industry.  A Diamond award for Transportation was presented to Creighton Manning and their team members, including SCE, which honors firms for their design achievements and engineering excellence.

As a member of the project team SCE provided Environmental and Stormwater services for the roadway/intersection at County Route 156/Fuller Road/Washington Avenue intersection in the City of Albany. SCE tasks included: wetland delineation, including Final Wetland Delineation Report; field screening for surface waters; development of general drainage basins to calculate Water Quality and Water Quantity volumes; writing the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP); and design of permanent Storm Water Management Practices (SMP) to comply with Storm Water Phase II requirements. SCE was responsible for all environmental screenings and documentation, including wetland delineation and Phase I & II hazardous waste investigations.

Shumaker Consulting Engineering & Land Surveying, D.P.C. (SCE) partnered with the Erdman Anthony team and is proud to announce they were recipients of an ACEC 2015 Diamond Award. The award winning project was for the Forest Home Drive Bridge Rehabilitation located in Ithaca NY.

As a member of the project team SCE provided Survey, Right of Way and environmental services for this project.  The project was a locally administered federal aid project (LAFAP) which involved rehabilitation of a historic steel truss bridge over Fall Creek in the Town of Ithaca. SCE was responsible for the preparation of Chapter IV of the Design Report and obtaining necessary USACE and NYSDEC permits. SCE environmental staff provided oversight of all environmental screenings, including surface waters, asbestos, and hazardous waste. SCE also provided survey and ROW mapping services for this bridge rehabilitation project. The survey area involved the limits along Forest Home Drive of approximately 150ft and 100ft up each branch of the Forest Home Drive and Caldwell Road Intersection.

PROVIDES ENGINEERING FOR MULTIPLE LEED-CERTIFIED BUILDING PROJECTS

Local engineering firm, Shumaker Consulting Engineering & Land Surveying, D.P.C. (SCE), with offices located in Binghamton, NY; Utica, NY; Albany, NY; and Montrose, PA provided engineering services to multiple building projects that recently received accreditation under the US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

SCE provided site civil engineering and stormwater design for the new Natural Science Building at the Broome Community College, which was recently awarded the LEED – Silver rating by the USGBC.  Under the design management of HOLT Architects, SCE provided all site engineering for the project. SCE’s tasks included increased parking using porous pavements, innovative stormwater green infrastructure which included stormwater planters, and infiltration measures to minimize any offsite stormwater impacts from the project.

SCE engineers also provided the site civil engineering and stormwater management design for a new dormitory at SUNY Cortland, subsequently named “Dragon Hall”.  This 5-story dormitory project was awarded LEED – Platinum status, which is the highest attainable level of sustainability.  The project was completed under the design management of Stantec, and is the first dormitory in New York State to receive such a high rating. 

“These are high-performance, energy efficient, and sustainable designs which focus on minimizing environmental impacts to offsite areas” said Curtis Nichols of Shumaker Consulting Engineering & Land Surveying, D.P.C. and Project Manager for both projects. “This is an exciting and challenging time for high-end structure design because there is always the trade-off between construction costs and the rate of return on efficient and sustainable construction practices”. 

SHUMAKER ENGINEERING FOUNDER, VERNON “BUD” O. SHUMAKER, PASSES AWAY

Vernon Otto Shumaker (Bud) died peacefully on October 1, 2013 surrounded by his loving family and the caring staff at Good Shepherd Fairview Home. Bud is survived by his wife Sarah and children: Barbara S. Levitt (Potomac, MD), Linda M. Shumaker (Binghamton, NY)-President of Shumaker Consulting Engineering & Land Surveying, D.P.C., Frederick F. Shumaker (Binghamton, NY), and Robert D. Shumaker (New York, NY). Bud is also survived by grandchildren: Karen L. Levitt (Alexandria, VA), Emma M. Levitt (Boston, MA), April F. Shumaker (Binghamton, NY), and Katharine H. Shumaker (Loveland, CO) and sons-in-law Joseph A. Levitt (Potomac, MD) and Peter A. Leddy (Binghamton, NY). Bud is predeceased by his daughter Karen Jean, mother Laura Helen, father Fred, and brother Robert. Born in Stroudsburg, PA on November 15, 1921, Bud's life exemplified the Greatest Generation – he grew up during the deprivation of the Great Depression, served in the US Navy in World War II, and then helped build America to prominence after the war. Bud received his Civil Engineering degree from Cornell University in 1948 where he played the trumpet in the Big Red Marching Band and was active in his fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi. After college, Bud worked at McFarland Johnson Engineers in Binghamton, NY where he became a professional engineer specializing in transportation and infrastructure. It was at a fraternity party back at Cornell however, where he met his wife, Sarah Gardner. They married on September 30, 1950. In 1956, Bud started a civil engineering firm with partner Robert J. Martin. Bud then moved on to start Vernon O. Shumaker Consulting Engineers in 1963, a sole proprietorship based in Vestal, NY. Bud grew his firm to 30 employees and was involved in hundreds of civil engineering projects throughout New York State. Most of the firm's projects took place in New York's Southern Tier and its regional infrastructure continues to benefit from his firm's dedication to quality engineering design. Bud was also one of the founding fathers of the Consulting Engineers Council of New York State. When he retired in 1992, his daughter Linda established the successor firm, Shumaker Consulting Engineering & Land Surveying, D.P.C. which continues Bud's legacy today. Bud was a freemason and a Shriner. He was also a member of Trinity Church, the American Legion, and was active in Cornell Alumni activities. As an avid outdoorsman, Bud spent much time in his later years maintaining the farm in Silver Lake, PA. Above all though, Bud cherished his wife and children and his steadfast support and love for his family will endure forever

SHUMAKER IS FAA CERTIFIED AND OFFERS A-GIS SERVICES FOR AVIATION PROJECTS

Shumaker Consulting Engineering & Land Surveying, D.P.C. (SCE) provides a complete range of survey and mapping services related to aviation engineering including geodetic and primary control surveys; photogrammetric control surveys; ROW surveying and mapping; global positioning system (GPS) surveys; digital terrain model surveys; geographic information systems (GIS); and other survey services necessary to design construction projects. SCE also offers specialized survey/mapping services, such as aerial photography, photogrammetry, and stereocompilation, through a subcontracting agreement with selected subcontracting firms.

What A-GIS Accomplishes

Collection of air transportation geospatial data for use with the Geospatial digital Airport Obstruction Chart (AOC) which is a 1:12000-scale graphic depicting:

* Airport layout features

* Landmark objects used as spatial reference (shorelines, prominent buildings and linear features)

* Reference Data including the Airport Control Point, Airport Reference Point, Runway threshold positions and up to 39 different types of Navaid Equipment

* Obstruction Identification Surface (OIS) Features and Obstructions including FAR-77 surfaces, Obstacles above or below the OIS, Obstruction Area, and Data relating to imaginary surfaces that define safe altitudes for approaches and landings (Obstruction Identification as specified in FAR Part 77)



A-GIS and NextGen FAA Requirements

“GIS surveys are being conducted to provide detailed geospatial data about airports.  The data will be used for new Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance (LPV) approaches, including obstruction analyses, as well as electronic Notices to Airmen and flight deck airport moving maps.  The central database for airport GIS data enhances sharing of both safety-critical data (such as runway end points or the location of navigational aids) and non-safety-critical data (such as the location of a building on the airfield).  In addition to providing users with current data, it will improve airport planning efforts with more efficient reviews of airport layout plan updates.”
